What you can expect
at a bed and breakfast

Gone are the doilies and knickknacks. Bed & breakfasts these days are more boutique hotels with great rooms, concierge service and your own personal chef. When you check into a Yamhill Valley B&B, you can expect a level of personalized service not found in hotels or motels.

“Bed and breakfasts in the Yamhill Valley are offering a very private and select kind of experience that is often custom-designed,” says Loni Parrish, owner of The Lions Gate Inn in Newberg. “There is a lot more personal care at B&Bs here. We provide concierge service, room suites and gourmet breakfasts.”

That personal care extends to helping you find the right restaurants, wineries or activities to suit your interests. It’s a constant in more than 25 area bed & breakfasts.

“Before guests come in, we will know what they want to do, what kind of experiences they’d like to have,” says Sara Starnes, who manages Loni’s trio of Distinctive Destinations lodgings. “For example, our guests tell us they want to go to some boutique wineries they’ve never heard of before. We know those places.

“We know the restaurants, too. It’s a lot of fun being able to help them.”

Loni notes, “We can even recommend other bed and breakfasts if we’re full,” explaining, “We want people to enjoy their experience and come back to the valley. Other bed and breakfasts do that, too.

“It’s not competitive here. It’s Oregon.”

Loni and Sara regularly refer to “the Oregon experience,” pointing out that people choose to stay in the Yamhill Valley so they can maximize their opportunities.

“This is such a central location to the mountains, the beach and the (Columbia) Gorge,” Loni says. “It’s the perfect location to see Oregon and still come home to a comfortable bed and all your luggage. You have a friendly face at breakfast and you’re ready to start the next day.”

First-time guests may only stay one or two nights, but many readily tell Sara they should have stayed longer. That, she says, is because “there’s so much more to do here then just wine.”

Sara says, “The biggest comment we get is, ‘I wish we had  booked another night.’

“We love to hear that, because this is a personal, one-on-one experience for us. It’s not just an 8-to-5 job for us or any B&B staff. It’s our life.”
